  16. QUESTION:  I have an interesting question for you.  A friend of mine, age 54,
  17. had his hair turn white from brown in two weeks.  What's the cause of this?  I
  18. hope you can provide the answer.  Thank you.

  22. ANSWER:  I wish you had provided more information.  Most of the questions
  23. about hair turning white merely relate stories they have heard, rather than
  24. people they have observed.  That's not too scientific.  Since hair grows
  25. slowly, at a rate of about 1 inch every 2-3 months, it wouldn't be possible
  26. for a complete change to occur in two weeks.  Some people have hair that is a
  27. mixture of white and colored hair.  When unusual stress occurs, brought on by
  28. a grave illness, severe emotional shock, or even pregnancy, the darker
  29. pigmented hairs may begin to fall out at an excessive rate.  For unknown
  30. reasons, the white (or unpigmented) hairs have a stronger hold on the scalp.
  31. The result is a rapid change from a dark looking head of hair to a much
  32. lighter one.  A condition called alopecia areata also causes a rapid loss of
  33. hair, and once again the colored hairs depart leaving only a thin covering of
  34. white (or grey) hairs.  There is one last possibility that came to mind when I
  35. reviewed your question.  Maybe your friend just stopped using his color rinse,
  36. and allowed his hair to return to the grey color that was always lurking their
  37. beneath the artificial color.
